GET OFF THE HAMSTER WHEEL!!!

5/29/20234 min read

We’re about to enter into the month of June at the end of which we would officially be halfway through 2023.

I have been exploring the topic of mental health during the month of May, and talked about the effects of stress on our mental health - including burnout. I want to end the month delving deeper into BURNOUT.

Why? I have lived it.

Furthermore, I see too many of you my Sistas either pushing through burnout or heading there fast.

Yes, my sista, you.

If you’ve been reading my blogs for a while you would know that I suffered from burnout after a lifetime of perfectionism and workaholism.

Unfortunately, that is what it took for me to realize that I had been neglecting myself.

I was forced to STOP, get off the hamster wheel, and take care of myself. Not only did I have to restore my health, I needed to do things differently if I were to remain healthy and not press REPEAT.

My sistas, we do NOT have to be on the “hamster wheel” to succeed in life. In Psalm 127:2 we learn that “It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” GET OFF THE HAMSTER WHEEL!!!!!!

If you’ve been on the “hamster wheel” chances are you are either suffering from or will soon suffer from burnout. Think about it:

Do you often feel physically and emotionally exhausted, even after getting enough rest?

Have you noticed a decrease in motivation and enthusiasm for your usual tasks or work-related activities?

Are you starting to develop a negative and cynical outlook towards work or the things you used to enjoy?

Have you been having difficulty concentrating, resulting in decreased efficiency and performance?

Are you experiencing frequent mood swings, irritability, or heightened frustration and anger?

Have you been struggling with sleep disturbances, such as trouble falling asleep or waking up frequently during the night?

Have you noticed frequent or persistent physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, or gastrointestinal problems?

Are you finding yourself withdrawing from social activities and feeling less interested in connecting with others?

Have you been neglecting self-care, such as healthy eating habits, exercise, or engaging in activities that bring you joy?

Despite your accomplishments, do you still feel unfulfilled, stuck, or like you're not making progress?

If you can relate to several of these symptoms, it's possible that you may be experiencing burnout.

It's important to take these signs seriously.

Here are three (3) strategies that can help you navigate and overcome burnout:

  1. Self-care: Prioritize taking care of yourself. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and engage in regular exercise. Additionally, set aside time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it's reading, listening to music, spending time in nature, or pursuing hobbies.

  1. Establish boundaries: Learn to set boundaries and say no when necessary. Be realistic about your workload and avoid overcommitting yourself. Remember, it's okay to prioritize your well-being and not take on more than you can handle.

  1. Seek support: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or colleagues for emotional support. Having someone to talk to can provide a fresh perspective, guidance, and a sense of understanding. If needed, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor.
